Emergency Medicine E/M Code Choice Reference MaterialMost coding organizations construct and
maintain reference material to assist their coding staffs in selecting the level of Medical
Decision Making (MDM), and ultimately, EM code choice. The Medicare audit tool is commonly
used by many emergency medicine coding organizations with the realization that is was
originally developed for use by multi-specialty clinics and office-based medical practices,
and not for the practice of emergency medicine.
Dr. John Stimler, who is certified as a professional coder (CPC) and in healthcare compliance (CHC), has created three coding tools
that are specific to the practice of emergency medicine and are based on an interpretation
of this audit tool. The documents developed by Dr. Stimler are as follows: An Emergency
Medicine Documentation and Coding Policies Manual, an Emergency Medicine Coding Grid User
Guide, and an Emergency Medicine Desktop Coding Reference. All three documents can be used
to supplement your current materials, or to serve as a starting point in creating your own
coding policy and procedures manual.
