BSA Healthcare and Emergency Medical Associates Announce Joint Venture to Address Healthcare Loss Prevention
October 2, 2006 - BSA Healthcare, a leading provider of healthcare consulting services, and
Emergency Medical Associates, a nationally-recognized emergency department administrative and staffing company,
today announced the establishment of a joint venture company - Allied Loss Prevention Services (ALPS).
ALPS - a physician owned and managed consulting firm - will offer loss prevention services to healthcare captives,
risk retention groups, commercial malpractice carriers, and third-party administrators, and witness preparation
counseling for medical malpractice defendants and their legal counsel. The joint venture will combine BSA Healthcare's
risk and claims management and healthcare consulting expertise and EMA's physician infrastructure and knowledge of the alternative
risk and commercial malpractice insurance marketplaces.
Dr. Kenneth Schultz, Director of Risk Services of BSA Healthcare, has been appointed President of ALPS. Dr. Schultz is
Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine. To date, he has managed over 1,200 professional liability incidents, claims,
and suits while supervising PLI programs with aggregate limits as high as $55 million. He currently holds Board Level or Executive
Management appointments to several medical liability captive insurance companies.
"ALPS' loss prevention philosophy is unique to the marketplace. We feel that the key to successful mitigation of risk is physician
behavioral change, and yet the very skill sets that are proven to reduce risk are often taught by individuals who have spent very
little time providing clinical care in a healthcare setting. As a physician owned and managed firm, we understand the physician mind set,"
said Dr. Schultz. "For commercial carriers, our services are an opportunity to reduce their claims payouts and provide their customers
with value-added programs. For healthcare organization's interested in assuming their own risk, we have the manpower and the experience
to put programs in place that will ensure success."
Said Jeffrey Bettinger, MD, Managing Member of BSA Healthcare: "BSA Healthcare has successfully collaborated
with EMA for many years. EMA's depth of physician expertise in medical risk management and loss prevention is unparalleled. Furthermore, Dr.
Schultz's deep experience in physician deposition and trial preparation has allowed him to become intimately familiar with the physician
practice patterns and mindsets that increase the likelihood of litigation. Our joint venture, ALPS, will combine these knowledge pools to
help medical professionals, commercial malpractice carriers, claims managers, and defense attorneys to effectively implement programs and
offer services that are proven to reduce risk and control claims losses." Michael Gerardi, MD, President of Superior RRG, EMA's Risk Retention
Group commented: "Risk begins with the provider. It must be proactively managed. The key, regardless of any healthcare company's PLI arrangement
is an outstanding loss prevention and claims management program. Without the proper knowledge base, however, creation of these programs is an
overwhelming task. Experience is crucial, as are resources. In partnering with BSA Healthcare to form ALPS, we have created an
organization that has both."
